If you’re looking to set up a simple, effective pasture irrigation system like ours, here’s how we did it.
Start with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) hose—typically ¾” to 1” SDR-9 works well. Run your main line from the water source to the center point of the area you want to service so you have flexibility to branch out.
Install a ball valve along the line for a quick and easy shut-off. From there, place Plasson quick-connect couplers every 100–200 feet. These make it easy to adjust or expand your system without a lot of extra work. Connect the male end of the coupler to a standard ¾” hose, then run that hose to a float valve mounted on the side of a water tank. This allows the tank to refill automatically without constant attention.
Cap the end of your main line, and when you first turn the system on, leave the valve open briefly to let any trapped air escape before fully pressurizing the line.
It’s a straightforward setup, but it’s made a huge difference in keeping water accessible across our pasture.
